Prime Minister’s Office Withheld Documents Pertaining to War Probe
By Ze’ev Schiff
(Haaretz)

Commentary;

It now seems obvious that Prime Minister Olmert has stonewalled the
State Comptroller for some 3 months regarding providing all of the documents and information and any other material which the State Controller deems pertinent to his investigation of the government’s handling and management of last summer’s hostilities in Lebanon according to Basic Law. read more

Government to HCJ on State Commissions: Excuses for the Unjustifiable…

No Explanations, Just Excuses (Haaretz Editorial)

Excerpts;

The High Court of Justice has asked the state to justify why no state commission of inquiry was appointed to examine the second Lebanon war, and why the less appropriate government review panel was chosen. But the state will not be able to justify it convincingly at the next hearing either, because only excuses can be made for the state’s behavior, not explanations.

Not a single good reason has been offered for preferring a government review panel, leaving only the obvious reason. A government review panel is more convenient for the government, both because the reviewers were appointed by the prime minister himself and because the government is not obligated to accept its recommendations or even to publicize them. read more

The Way to an Independent War Commission…

State Comptroller’s Report May Spark Independent War Commission

For Context, click here.

Full Text;

The state comptroller’s investigation into the war in Lebanon some feel may spark the formation of an independent commission of inquiry as is being demanded by many.

State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss has assigned 50 members of his staff to investigate the war in Lebanon, a report that is likely to spark much criticism after it is submitted to the Knesset Audit Committee.

Committee Chair MK (Yisrael Beitenu) Esterina Tratman is expected to use the report to launch her drive towards the establishment of an independent commission, unwilling to accept Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s government-appointed commission with its limited mandate. Tratman has called on the State Comptroller’s Office to submit an interim report, hoping to find the ammunition to arm herself for the battle against the prime minister, who remains adamantly opposed to an independent commission. read more

Winograd Commission Members Wearing Two Hats??

Secretary of Winograd Commission Kadima Activist During Elections

Commentary;

If these allegations are in fact true, and it would come as no great surprise if they are, then there are some giant conflict of interest and legal ethicacy questions which arise regarding the Winograd Commission. And assuredly, if these allegations are true, they represent merely the tip of Israeli government crime syndicate iceberg. MB

Subject: Per a staff member, Senator Lautenberg is revisiting the Jonathan Pollard case!

Earlier this afternoon, I made a call to Senator Frank Lautenberg’s office. I was told by one of his staff members that HE HAS RECEIVED A BARRAGE OF PHONE CALLS DEMANDING THAT THE SENATOR WORK TOWARDS FREEING JONATHAN POLLARD. THE PERSON I SPOKE WITH SAID THAT THE SENATOR’S STAFF HAS RECEIVED ABOUT 70 CALLS IN THE PAST COUPLE OF DAYS. I TOLD THE INDIVIDUAL THAT SENATOR LAUTENBERG HAD WRITTEN TO ME A FEW MONTHS AGO, STATING THAT HE WAS AGAINST THE RELEASE OF JONATHAN POLLARD AT THAT TIME. BECAUSE OF THE LARGE NUMBER OF PHONE CALLS, AND SUBSTANTIAL ATTENTION TO JONATHAN’S WELFARE, SENATOR LAUTENBERG IS REVISITING THE ISSUE! LET US KEEP UP THE PRESSURE AND GET JONATHAN HOME BY ROSH HASHANAH!!! read more

Totally Lacking Moral Integrity or Principle, Mofaz Backs Off Support for State Commission…

Mofaz Backtracks on War Probe, By Gil Hoffman (Jerusalem Post)

Excerpts;

Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz has changed his mind and will either abstain or vote in favor of the government commission Prime Minister Ehud Olmert formed to investigate the war in Lebanon, sources close to Mofaz said on Monday night.

Mofaz’s decision came a day after he became the first Kadima minister to call for a state commission of inquiry into the war. Olmert’s associates reacted angrily to Mofaz’s call, saying that Mofaz was more to blame than anyone else for the blunders of the war. read more

A 9/11-Like Commission for Israel?

Create a ‘9/11 Commission’
From The Jerusalem Post

Not since the end of the 1973 war has there been such a pervasive sense that something fundamental is wrong with our political and military leadership. Even if this sense is exaggerated, the breadth of public distrust and discouragement is itself a problem that must be addressed.

The principal mechanism to begin restoring confidence in our leadership needs to be a proper investigation into the conduct of the war, how the problems the war revealed developed over time, and what must be done to fix them. read more

Full-Blown Supreme Court Mandated Commision of Investigation of War Mandatory…

This author reiterates what was posted to this blog just a couple of days ago regarding DM Peretz’s designation of a commission of investigation;

“Wouldn’t a more thorough, objective analysis and judgement come from the likes of Generals Giora Eiland, director of Israel’s national security council and Moshe Ya’alon, former IDF Chief of Staff preceding Halutz, or by State Controller Michal Lindenstrauss?” MB

Ms. Roth came to Amona at that time to compile material for a doctoral assignment. She previously worked as an assistant to MK Matan Vilnai and former Labor party leader Amram Mitzna.

Ms. Roth stated that she had been in Amona since the day before the expulsion. She noticed that in their pre-evacuation preparations, residents and demonstrators alike stressed the need to avoid violence. Demonstrators were told many times that the struggle should resemble that of Gush Katif and that protest methods such as sitting on the ground and other forms of passive resistance should be used. read more
