Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas resumed talks with Hamas over the release of IDF Cpl. Gilad Shalit who was abducted from Israel to Gaza some four weeks ago, it was reported on Friday.
The Palestinian London-based Al Hayat al-Jadeeda reported that Shin Bet (Internal Security Agency) committed to Abbas some two weeks ago that if Shalit were to be released, then Israel would release a large number of Palestinian prisoners “without blood on their hands.”
Second Barrage of Katyusha Rockets Strikes Haifa

A second barrage of Katyusha rockets struck the Haifa area on Friday afternoon, less than an hour after the first assault of the day.
One of the rockets landed in Kiryat Yam, while the other two fell in open areas, Channel 10 reported. Initial reports suggested that no one was wounded in the second attack.

Peretz Hints at Ground Operation in Lebanon

Defense Minister Amir Peretz hinted Thursday that the Israel Defense Forces could launch a ground operation in Lebanon.
“Hezbollah must not think that we would recoil from using all kinds of military measures against it,” Peretz said during a visit to communities in the Katyusha-battered north.
“We have no intention of occupying Lebanon, but we also have no intention of retreating from any military measures needed,” he said.

FOR SIX years, since Ehud Barak surrendered to the demands of the radical, EU-funded Israeli Left and withdrew IDF forces from southern Lebanon in May 2000, Israel stood by and did nothing as Hizbullah built up its massive arsenal of rockets and missiles. The IDF did nothing as Iran effectively set up shop along the border.
MK Erdan: Restrict Publication of Rocket Landings

MK Gilad Erdan (Likud) called on Defense Minister Amir Peretz to enact Section 87 of Defense Emergency Regulations and tell the military censor to restrict media publication of the exact locations of rocket landings.
“The public feels a need to keep up with what’s going on, but it is still necessary to release strictly general information that’s not likely to aid the enemy and endanger the security of Israel and its citizens,” Erdan said.
Israeli Ground Troops Enter Lebanon

At daybreak Wednesday, a small number of Israeli troops were operating just across the border inside southern Lebanon, looking for tunnels and weapons, the Israeli military said without providing any more details.
The incursion came a day after Israel indicated that it might send large numbers of ground troops into the southern Lebanon, but Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Dan Gillerman denied Wednesday’s operation was part of any such operation.
“What is going on at the moment is a number of Israeli ground troops very near to the border on the Lebanese side, trying to destroy some Hezbollah outposts,” he told CNN.
