High Homeless Numbers for Expulsion Refugees

“According to a report by the Committee of Gaza Settlements, almost a third of the refugees from the expulsion of Jewish communities from Gaza are still homeless.

“Figures provided by the Disengagement Authority and the Committee show that some thirty percent of the 8,000 Jews who were forced out of their homes last summer are still living in hotels, some entire families in school dormitories and even tents.

“The two agencies agreed on little else, however. Despite some progress in finding sites for the communities to re-establish themselves, the jobless rate for the refugees remains high. read more

Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court Judge Edna Bankenstein on Tuesday sentenced Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s son, Omri, to nine months in jail, nine months probation, and a NIS 300,000 fine.

“However, in light of his father’s condition, the judge granted a postponement of his jail time for six months.”

“Sharon’s lawyer, Navit Negev, complained that the sentence was too stiff and that they planned to appeal, Army Radio reported.” read more

Shmuel Riffman, who heads the Negev Development Company, sent a letter to Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, in which he states money is not the reason holding up the protection for frontline homes and communities.

“’Both of us know the defense establishment finished 2005 with funds remaining in the coffer,’ wrote Riffman in his letter.”

Negev officials explain that NIS 95 million of a NIS 210 million earmarked for protection have yet to be released by the national government while rocket attacks against the communities have become a daily occurrence.” read more
