Havdalah: A Thought to Take Into the Week …

Don’t Leave It in the Beit Medrash

Over Shabbos, this author spotted a vort from Rabbi Artscroll in the Stone Chumash (Parsha Terumah, Perek 25, posukim 31-40, page 451 in Stone Chumash) which bears repeating;

“The Menorah, whose flames were fed by the purest oil of the olive, symbolized by the illumination of the intellect. It was placed near the southern wall of the Tabernacle (Mishkan), opposite the Table (Shulchan) on the north. The Ark (Aron HaKodesh) … was equidistant from both. … The Ark , containing the word of G’d, cast its spiritual emanations, as it were, upon the Menorah and the Table, which represented intellectual achievement and material prosperity. This symbolized the conviction that both our spiritual and temporal lives must be guided by, and work to serve, the dictates of the Torah. Jewish life cannot be compartmentalized in the realms of sacred and temporal, or in the modern vernacular, Church and State; the Torah regulates all aspects of life, and demands purity in all of them. Indeed, the requirement that the entire, very intricate Menorah had to be hammered out of one ingot of gold (posukim 31, 39) symbolized the indivisibilty of the Torah; a Jewish life must be constructed entirely from one set of values. It may not be a hodge-podge of separate bits and pieces, grafted together to suit anyone’s convenience. All areas of life must derive from the same set of values.” read more

Parsha Terumah 5766: What Motivates Men?

Parsha Terumah 5766: What Motivates Men?

By, Moshe Burt

Last year, this author wrote regarding man’s motivations, equating them with what drives the athlete in the beginning, or as we baseball fans say, in the “Big Inning”. And as has been done regarding other Parshiyot, this year a revisit of the motivation of men seems appropriate.

What drives the high-priced athlete? The big and increasing paycheck? The “Team effort?” Increased or enhanced fame and influence? Love and study of the game? What drives them? read more

Olmert & Kadima: Follow Me! But, Where?

Kadima: Follow Me to the Middle of Nowhere

Excerpts;

“Olmert stands for nothing and has accomplished even less.”

Israelis love slogans. Come up with the right slogan, even if it makes no sense, if it’s a total lie, and they will support anyone, and any cause. Sell them ‘Peace Now’ wrapped up in little white doves, and they’ll vote for that. And if instead they get exploding buses and pizza parlors, dead babies on the streets, they won’t stop believing. They won’t look back and say: ‘Gee, those politicians were incompetent liars, let’s kick them out of office and keep them there.’ Not at all. Come up with another slogan and the exact same politicians will get their vote again.” read more

Gee Grandma, What Big Teeth You Have: “When Perfidy Parades as Patriotism”

Israel’s March of Folly

Excerpts;

“One by one the layers of absurdity are being stripped off the bizarre mix of irrationality and irresponsibility that has masqueraded as government policy in the country for almost a decade and a half since the fall of the Shamir government in 1992.”

“Probably few remember that the current ‘March of Folly’ began during the 1992 election campaign. It was then that the Labor Party, headed by the late Yitzhak Rabin and spurred on the wooly-headed dovish elements in his own party and by reckless radical factions to the left of it, proclaimed to the Israeli electorate it would break what they denounced as decades of unnecessary stagnant stalemate on the Palestinian issue. read more
