The holy site is located in Bethlehem, a short 3-minute drive from southern Jerusalem. Access to the site was always a simple matter, with public Egged buses and private cars bringing thousands to the tomb to pray.

But the Israel government’s policy of building walls to confront terrorism has affected Rachel’s tomb drastically. Access to the holy site is no longer possible through public buses, rather one must be transferred to a special bullet proof vehicle and travel via a route that is surrounded by tall walls. read more

Rabbi Faces Unprecedented Disciplinary Hearing for Expressing Dissent

For the first time in Israel, a Rabbi faced a disciplinary religious court set up by the Chief Rabbinate for making “extremist statements”.

The Rabbi is Rabbi David Druckman, one of those who opposed the disengagement plan, who said it was a serious violation of Halacha [Jewish Law], so serious as to be a betrayal of Judaism, the Torah and Halacha.

Druckman’s lawyer, Rabbi Tzuriel Bublil, appeared on his behalf, who argued that not only is Rabbi Druckman being put on trial, but all the Rabbis of Israel, who consider Halacha to be the supreme arbiter. read more

In the elections PM Olmert said he wanted to retreat to permanent borders. Now he wants to retreat to a temporary line if part of the world temporarily “recognizes” the temporary line. Olmert isn’t claiming that his proposed retreat would put a stop to the ongoing “slicing” of the Israeli “salami”. He also isn’t clear what constitutes “recognition”.

Members of an armed Fatah militia which claimed to have kidnapped an Israeli citizen Saturday transferred the individual in question, a U.S. citizen, to the custody of the Palestinian Authority before dawn Sunday.

Gaza Beach Carnage Footage Staged?

A terrible tragedy happened on the Gaza beach. A shell exploded and killed 7 men, women and children and injured others. Israel is investigating. But Mark Regev, the Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman who said that Israel believes such shelling of civilians to be unacceptable also told the BBC that naval or air shelling have been ruled out. Other possibities are explored. In the meantime Hamas vows to end the unilateral cease-fire with Israel.
