In Israel, Vested Interests Trumps Caring for Fellow Jews …

In the tradition of Malcolm Hoenlein who sat on the truth regarding William Tenet’s position on Jonathan Pollard for 6 years, Jonathan Bassi and Major General Giora Eiland have now denounced the Sharon/Olmert government actions “disengagement” from Gush Katif as well as, in Eiland’s case, Olmert’s, convergence (or is that consolidation, or perhaps realignment) plan. Official: Jews Expelled From Gaza ‘Victims’ Withdrawal Authority Says Israel Owes Them ‘Almost Anything’

Commentary;

The question to be asked by any thinking person; Why did he wait so long to speak out and admit that the govt lied?? The answer seems clear; that Jonathan Bassi had too much to lose as his businesses apparently gained greatly by the Gaza refugees’losses. He forsook his fellow Jews for the advancement of his business interests.

Here is a sampling of Bassi’s gains at the expense of his fellow Jews;
(1), (2), (3), and (4). MB

Unqualified Failure

Excerpts;

Yonatan Bassi was supposed to take care of settlers. Instead, he only took care of Sharon’s vision

No one stays in the same job forever, especially someone who fails to do his job properly. (Outgoing Disengagement Authority head) Yonatan Bassi was presented to us as some sort of “father figure,” a man who would look after us and who was supposed to sweeten the bitter pill we were forced to swallow.

Many sweet-sounding promises were made, some of which even looked pretty good on paper. But in actual fact, nothing he said bore any relation to the facts on the ground. From day one, I understood that if this man was supposed to be my “father,” I would prefer to be an orphan.

Bassi: Evacuees Victims of Gov’t, by Ronny Sofer

Excerpts;

Disengagement Authority head says State owes evacuated settlers ‘almost anything,’ as they fell victim to its policy. I salute evacuees, he states

Yonatan Bassi, head of the Disengagement Authority, is set to retire his post within one month and be replaced by Tzvia Shimon, who currently serves as deputy director-general at the prime Minister’s officer, PM Ehud Olmert announced Wednesday.

“Despite the fact we stood at the most difficult friction point with the settlers, I salute their nobleness,” Bassi said. “I’m proud for having been given the opportunity to stand at this historic junction at a time Israel made one of its most difficult decisions of the last generation,” he added.

Now, for Eiland;

Gaza Retreat Planner Maj. Gen. Eiland Slams Sharon for Lack of Planning, Slams Olmert Plan

[IMRA: While civil servants employed in other democracies might feel compelled to resign when they realize that they are involved in a disaster-in-the making so that they may warn the public, there is no such tradition in Israel.]

Commentary;

Eiland’s arguments are vague and totally lack clarity. It’s next to impossible to understand the rationale of his statements. He keeps mentioning “missed opportunities” but doesn’t clearly explain himself. But, as Aaron Lerner asks, if he had such issues with the expulsion, why didn’t he resign. Obviously, Eiland cared more about the prestigious position than about his principles, whatever they are. MB

Postscript;

What Eiland meant by “missed opportunities” is becoming clearer; a regional settlement with Egypt giving some land adjacent to Gaza and Israel compensating Egypt by relinquishing more land in the southern Negev in a swap with Egypt and with Jordan giving further land to the “pa (sic)” so that Israel can have “defensible borders” after giving away 88% of Yehuda and The Shomron.
