Ari Shavit did an interview with former Chief of Staff Moshe “Boogey” Yaalon which appeared in this past Friday’s (15 September, 2006) Haaretz Magazine.
Aaron Lerner, in posting the interview on IMRA observed “Those in the national camp hoping to see Ya’alon teaming with Netanyahu should take note… when asked about the Golan [Yaalon responds]: “If a territorial concession will bring about true peace and full recognition of Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state, I am not against that.”
PM: Commission to Have State Powers

The Winograd Commission of investigation into the management of the war in Lebanon will be given the same authority as a state commission, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Sunday at the opening of the weekly cabinet meeting.
“It is the government’s intention to invest the committee with all the powers of a state inquiry commission, as required by law and according to the decision of the justice minister,” he said.
“I hope the committee will complete its task as quickly as possible and help the State of Israel better prepare itself for the challenges that await us,” Olmert said.

Winograd Panel to Start Probe of War From 2000 Pullout, By Aluf Benn (Haaretz)
The cabinet is expected to approve the establishment of a governmental committee of inquiry into the Lebanon war Sunday, after its composition and mandate were finalized on Thursday.
The committee, headed by retired judge Eliyahu Winograd, will examine how the government and defense establishment dealt with the Hezbollah threat in the years preceding the war, as well as how they conducted the war after it broke out on July 12.
IDF: Egypt Not Stopping [Arms] Smuggling

At least one ton of explosives is being conveyed across the Sinai border Gaza each month, a high-ranking IDF officer revealed on Thursday.
Following Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza last year, Egypt deployed 750 border policemen along the border with Gaza in agreement with Israel. The force, the officer said, has proven to be “ineffective” in stopping the smuggling into Gaza despite the Egyptian government’s interest and readiness to assist Israel in preventing the terror buildup in the Palestinian territory.
