Acting PM Mandate is Nearing an End

Full Text;

In 2.5 weeks, the 100-day maximum permitted an acting prime minister will come to an end, bringing an end to the current term of Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

If a new government is not established by that time, a new prime minister will have to be appointed. So ruled the Supreme Court on Monday, in response to a petition calling for the appointment of a prime minister immediately and an official declaration that comatose Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is unable to carry out his duties. read more

Kadima: We Have No Ideology

Kadima’s Sheetrit: “We’ve Disengaged from All Ideologies”

Excerpts;

At the Kadima Party’s campaign-concluding conference in the northern city of Kiryat Motzkin last night, Sheetrit said, ” We have former members of Labor, and former members of the Likud, and people who were not in any party. We are no longer carrying the baggage of the legacy of Ze’ev Jabotinsky or Berl Katznelson on our backs.”

Both Sheetrit and another Kadima figure, Shimon Peres, said they are not afraid of Hamas. “We are not worried about Hamas, and they do not pose a threat to us,” Sheetrit said. read more

Text: Haaretz’s Ari Shavit Debates Chaim Ramon on Olmert’s Retreat Plan

For context, click here.

Excerpts;

Haim Ramon called. He really didn’t like the op-ed in which I severely criticized the Olmert plan. He was surprised – he thought we were on the same wavelength. He thought I understood that Yossi Beilin and Benjamin Netanyahu were wrong. And, of course, he didn’t agree with a single word in the piece. But perhaps it would be right to hold a serious debate on the pages of Haaretz. Perhaps it would be right to present each arguments, ahead of the elections, to the voting readers. read more

The Battered Woman Syndrome

Excerpts;

The provocative campaign of the National Union-National Religious Party against my candidacy for the Knesset is, above all, reminiscent of the battered woman. A man beats, abuses and dishonors his wife, who, in great anger, throws him out of the house; yet, he is sure that he will return. He will convince her that he is the best husband, that there can be no one else. Perhaps he will bring her perfume or a flower; he might also explain that beatings are necessary and part of reality. In fact, most women are appeased, make up with their husbands and expect a honeymoon, but he barely walks over the doorstep and already he’s raising his hand against her. read more

MK Eitam Congratulates IDF Chief-of-Staff on Chief Rabbi Appointment

Full Text;

MK Effi Eitam (National Union – NRP) has congratulated IDF Chief-of-Staff Lt.Gen. Dan Halutz on his selection of Avichai Ronsky, head of the yeshiva in the Samarian community of Itamar, as the next Chief Rabbi of the IDF.

Eitam said, “Ronsky was a commander in the IDF and knows first hand the challenges the army faces in the battlefield.”

Commentary;

Reason #1;

Ronsky, 54, a resident of Itamar, is the author of three books of responsa on halachic issues pertinent to the religious soldier. He has a lenient halachic position regarding allowing the desecration of the Shabbat for military needs. This position, which has been criticized by other rabbis, may make him more attractive to IDF commanders who want a minimum of religious restrictions on their soldiers. read more

Gov’t Workers Promised Awards For Taking Part in Expulsion Still Waiting

Full Text;

Defense Ministry workers who were promised vacations and pay hikes in return for their voluntary participation in the expulsion of Jews from Gaza and northern Samaria last summer now complain that those commitments have gone unfulfilled.

Workers originally received emails promising awards for those who volunteered to man the perimeter and participate on other indirect support during the implementation of the Disengagement. Many volunteered and after the last community was destroyed, a large party was held for all the volunteers, who expressed willingness to take part in such operations in the future in exchange for similar promises. read more

This Blog’s Election Endorsement …

This author has been going through a deep internal battle and deliberation as to who to vote for on Tuesday.

This internal battle has been regarding commitment to Likud via Moshe Feiglin vs first, the National Union, but more powerfully in recent days, between voting for Likud or voting Hazit.

Even given my deep level of commitment to Moshe and to Manhigut Yehudit and the Torah way which they stand for, and on account of what I am perceiving (B’Ezrat Hashem correctly) as an extremely well organized campaign where some 63,000 plus have verbally or in writing committed to Baruch and that Hazit “will have observers at all of the Kalpiot (voting stations) to make sure ballots are not thrown out “, I have just called the Hazit number and have committed my vote to Baruch Marzel. read more

Olmert: Only Pro-Uprooting Parties in My Government

Excerpt;

In an attempt to win votes back, Kadima’s prime ministerial candidate, Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, announced last night that any party that refuses to accept the concept of “inward-turning” – the name he has given his plan to carry out further unilateral withdrawals – will not be invited to join the government he expects to form. Olmert thus hopes to play on the desires of Shas and Yisrael Beiteinu voters, and, to a lesser extent, those of the hareidi-religious United Judaism Party (UTJ), to see their parties in the government. read more
