Katif Expellee Ordered to Expel Hevron Jews

Full Text;

According to Rabbi Elyakim Levanon, the head of the hesder yeshiva in Elon Moreh, one of the soldiers sent to expel Jews from their homes in Hevron on Tuesday was expelled from his home in Gush Katif in 2005. “Is it logical,” Rabbi Levanon asked, “to ask a young man who lives in [caravan city] Nitzan and whose family was expelled to expel people from their homes?”

The general public would agree that the young man should not have been required to participate in the expulsion, Rabbi Levanon said. He called on IDF officials to investigate the incident. If a soldier tells his commander that he is unable to fulfill an order because it goes against his ideals, Rabbi Levanon added, “that is not refusing orders.”

Commentary;

Rabbi Elyakim Levanon, the head of the hesder yeshiva in Elon Moreh disclosed, during discussion of what constitutes a an illegal orderm that an expelled former Gush Katif resident was ordered to expell Jews from Jewish property in the former Hevron shuk. Rav Levanon noted;

“One of the commanders who was tried [for refusing to take part in the Hevron eviction] was [himself] expelled from Gush Katif…”

Rav Levanon, as if foreseeing a possible result of Tuesday’s Likud primary, voiced this warning;

“Rabbi Levanon warned against trying to ‘strangle’ an ideology. ‘Such a move,’ he warned, ‘will only result in finding that ideology in the prime minister’s office instead.'”
