Education Minister Yuli Tamir, speaking at the Beer Sheva Conference of the National Council for the Child, criticized the Treasury’s plan for educational reform for introducing free-market principles into the educational system. She complained that the new proposal would reward teachers, principals, and schools for student performance, and would allow parents to choose their child’s school instead of having it mandated by district.

Tamir complained that the proposals are tantamount to privatization of the educational system, and likened the increased competition between schools to a beauty pageant, which has nothing to do with educational principles.

The Ministry of Education has come under increased scrutiny in recent years, as the average Israeli student ranks lower and lower as the cost per student inches higher and higher according to international benchmarks.
