Israel Beiteinu chairman Avigdor Lieberman hinted that his party could be on the way to joining the coalition in an interview on Sunday with The Jerusalem Post.
Lieberman said that following a conversation with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, the gaps between Kadima and his party were narrowing on the conditions that Lieberman set for two months ago for joining the government.
The conditions were changing the governmental system, solving the problem of couples in Israel who are prohibited to marry, the establishment of a state committee of inquiry to investigate the war in Lebanon, and agreement to drop both the issue of unauthorized outposts and the realignment plan.
“We don’t have an ideology of staying in the opposition,” Lieberman said. “We tried to join the coalition when the government was formed but we didn’t convince Kadima to give up on the realignment plan. But now that they have given up on the plan, things are different.”
Lieberman said he would meet again with Olmert to discuss joining the coalition after his proposal to change the governmental system is voted on in the Knesset next week. He said that coalition talks could be completed very quickly if both parties decide that Israel Beiteinu should be in the coalition.
Israel Beiteinu is seeking the following changes in the governmental system: direct elections for prime minister; that ministers not be allowed to be MKs; the prime minister would appoint professional ministers; and raising the voter threshold to 4-5%. Lieberman said Olmert agreed to most of his demands on the issue.
