Olmert’s Chickens Coming Home to Roost?

PM Sources: Probe Report ‘Speculation’, By Dan Izenberg (Jerusalem Post)

Full Text;

Reports that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will face a criminal investigation upon his return from China are just “speculations,” sources close to Olmert said Wednesday morning.

The sources declared that “we have not received any official statement from an authoritative source on this issue,” Army Radio reported.

Olmert refrained from commenting Wednesday on a report he would face a criminal investigation upon his return from a state visit to China. read more

Corrupt, Graft-Ridden, Impotent Government: Most Dangerous Threat to Israel Today…

The Intra-Israeli Threat, by Ari Shavit (Haaretz)

“The dilemma the attorneys are facing is not just about the affair itself. This is not just a matter of different ways in which the astounding evidentiary material can be read. Each of the three knows exactly what forces he is facing and what he can expect if he dares to enter into a confrontation with the strongest power centers in the country. Each knows that a chill wind of McCarthyism is blowing here today.”

“The attorneys’ decision must be clean, clear and transparent. They cannot leave ambiguous a question of such importance. They must know what lies in the balance; and if there is a festering abscess in the Bank Leumi affair, then it must be excised. Dealing with the intra-Israeli threat is now, above all, on the desks of three honest attorneys in Jerusalem. They must not fail. They must not allow the rot to eat the foundations of this society.” read more

Over-Zealousness in Oversight and Uncovering Governmental Wrong-Doing is No Vice…

In Praise of Lindenstrauss Jerusalem Post Editorial

Excerpts;

In an imposing advertisement in the Hebrew press, five of the country’s more prominent law and political science professors – Amnon Rubinstein, Shlomo Avineri, Yaffa Zilbershatz, Yoav Dotan and Arik Carmon – last week lambasted State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss for doing “damage to the order of government in Israel.” His primary sin appears to boil down to over-zealousness.

Lindenstrauss, the five assert, treads dangerously on the police’s turf, blurring lines of distinction between his probes and criminal investigations. read more

Supreme Court’s Power Grab: Stepping into Every Void Left By Executive, Legislative Branches…

Judge, Jury and Executioner by Evelyn Gordon (Jerusalem Post)

Excerpts;

Regardless of how the High Court of Justice ultimately rules, its issuance of a show-cause order last week against the government’s refusal to establish a state commission of inquiry into the Lebanon war – thereby effectively asserting the power to overturn this decision – represents a major new encroachment on the powers of the other two branches of government.

The problem that bothered the court is undeniably real: By instead establishing a governmental inquiry committee, the government retained the power to appoint the committee’s members, meaning that it essentially hand-picked the very people who will be investigating its actions. And that, despite the unquestionably high character of the committee members actually chosen, obviously makes it harder for the investigation to earn public credibility. read more

The Way to an Independent War Commission…

State Comptroller’s Report May Spark Independent War Commission

For Context, click here.

Full Text;

The state comptroller’s investigation into the war in Lebanon some feel may spark the formation of an independent commission of inquiry as is being demanded by many.

State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss has assigned 50 members of his staff to investigate the war in Lebanon, a report that is likely to spark much criticism after it is submitted to the Knesset Audit Committee.

Committee Chair MK (Yisrael Beitenu) Esterina Tratman is expected to use the report to launch her drive towards the establishment of an independent commission, unwilling to accept Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s government-appointed commission with its limited mandate. Tratman has called on the State Comptroller’s Office to submit an interim report, hoping to find the ammunition to arm herself for the battle against the prime minister, who remains adamantly opposed to an independent commission. read more

High Court of Justice to Olmert Regime: Show-Cause Why No State Commission…

High Court: Why No State Commission?

Commentary;

Will all of Olmert’s excuses for forming the Winograd Commission rather than submitting to an independent State Commission fly with the Supreme Court? MB

Excerpts;

The High Court of Justice on Thursday issued a show-cause order and gave the state six days to explain why it had appointed a government committee of examination into the second Lebanese war instead of a state commission of inquiry headed by a Supreme Court justice.

A panel of three judges headed by Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch ordered the state to explain what was the scope of the government committee’s powers to investigate a matter of “general national significance” and whether it was proper for the government to appoint a committee which would have to investigate those who appointed it. read more

Subject: Per a staff member, Senator Lautenberg is revisiting the Jonathan Pollard case!

Earlier this afternoon, I made a call to Senator Frank Lautenberg’s office. I was told by one of his staff members that HE HAS RECEIVED A BARRAGE OF PHONE CALLS DEMANDING THAT THE SENATOR WORK TOWARDS FREEING JONATHAN POLLARD. THE PERSON I SPOKE WITH SAID THAT THE SENATOR’S STAFF HAS RECEIVED ABOUT 70 CALLS IN THE PAST COUPLE OF DAYS. I TOLD THE INDIVIDUAL THAT SENATOR LAUTENBERG HAD WRITTEN TO ME A FEW MONTHS AGO, STATING THAT HE WAS AGAINST THE RELEASE OF JONATHAN POLLARD AT THAT TIME. BECAUSE OF THE LARGE NUMBER OF PHONE CALLS, AND SUBSTANTIAL ATTENTION TO JONATHAN’S WELFARE, SENATOR LAUTENBERG IS REVISITING THE ISSUE! LET US KEEP UP THE PRESSURE AND GET JONATHAN HOME BY ROSH HASHANAH!!! read more

State Controller Can Blow Olmert’s Attempts to Deflect Responsibility Out of Water…

War Committee to Begin Probe Monday By Herb Keinon (Jerusalem Post)

Excerpts;

The Winograd Committee, created to probe the war in Lebanon, is expected to start its work on Monday, following a tortuous route, whereby it took almost as long for the government to set up a committee to investigate the war as it did to fight the war itself.

The cabinet on Sunday approved the establishment of the Winograd Governmental Investigative Committee by a vote of 20-2, with Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz (Kadima) abstaining. read more

Investigating Olmert …

Investigating Olmert By Michael Freund
(Israel National News)

Ehud Olmert is in trouble.

Despite the Government’s best efforts to avoid a serious inquiry into its handling of this summer’s Lebanon war, it now seems all but certain that wide-ranging investigation will, at last, take place.

Speaking before the Knesset State Control Committee today, State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss made clear that he has every intention of conducting a thorough examination of the Government’s conduct of the war. read more
