Families Demand Winograd Be Published

A group of bereaved families demanded on Sunday that Judge Eliahu Winograd, who heads the Winograd Committee of investigation into the Second Lebanon War, publish transcripts of the committee hearings.
“If you don’t intend to abide by this court order,” the families wrote in a letter, “We call on you to resign from the committee, in order to set up a state committee of inquiry and disband this shameless government.”
The state prosecutor backed up the Winograd Committee’s request not to publish transcripts of the committee protocols until an official interim report was issued.

Olmert: Peace Within Five Years

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Saturday night that a comprehensive regional peace plan could be reached within five years. While Olmert said that the Saudi plan, which calls for Israel to give the PA all of Judea, Samaria, and Gaza and to accept several million Arabs as citizens, is “not good enough,” he said that it is much better than the peace plans offered in the past. Olmert called the plan “very interesting,” and said that he sees Saudi Arabia’s role in the Middle East as very positive.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met Friday with Lebanese security chiefs during his two-day visit to Lebanon….
The leading Lebanese daily An-Nahar reported Saturday that Ban told the Lebanese security chiefs that Israel had provided him with “evidence and pictures” of trucks crossing from Syria to Lebanon and unloading weapons.
On Saturday, Ban again voiced concern about the reported arms smuggling.

Associates of former justice minister Haim Ramon said Thursday that he was to decide on whether to return to politics only after the Pessah holidays.
Earlier, the Tel Aviv Magistrate’s Court decided to uphold the Ramon’s conviction of committing an indecent act, but ruled that the felony would not carry with it moral turpitude, which would enable Ramon to return to public life, if he chose to do so.
Ramon will still have to carry out 120 hours of community service.

DF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi told the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Wednesday that the buildup of terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip required a swift and urgent response, Army Radio reported.
At his first appearance before the committee, Ashkenazi said that one of the main immediate goals he had set for himself was to stem the smuggling of weapons and technology from the Gaza Strip into the West Bank.
Following the meeting, MKs expressed satisfaction with Ashkenazi’s presentation, and did not hesitiate to compare him to his predecessor, Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz.
