Parsha Behar 5767; Shemittoh — Reinforcing the Bond Between Jew and HIS Land

by Moshe Burt

Rashi asks a critical question on the very first posuk of our Parsha;
“Hashem spoke to Moshe on Har Sinai, saying.” (Parsha Behar, Vayikra Perek 25, posuk 1) He asks why the laws of Shemittoh are singled out as having been given at Sinai. Were not all of the Mitzvot said at Sinai?” He answers that just as all of the Mitzvot; their general rules and their specifics were taught at Sinai, so too were the general rules and specifics regarding Shemittoh taught at Sinai. Rashi then reasons that the posuk comes to teach us that every utterance said to Moshe, they were all from Sinai. read more

Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch: A Part of the Problem, Not the Solution

‘Israel is Verging on Moral Collapse’ (Jerusalem Post)

Full Text;

“Israel is on the verge of moral collapse,” Supreme Court President Dorit Beinisch said in a conference on education hosted by Seminar Hakibutzim, Sunday.

“We are in the midst of a cultural and political turmoil and storm clouds are brewing. We are experiencing failures, societal class struggles, poverty and a lack of public trust in all state institutions,” Beinisch said.

However, despite her harsh statements, Beinisch has also voiced optimism in saying that, after perusing the conference program, she thought that, “perhaps we can still say that…it isn’t too late.” She said that change is possible due to the fact that there are many people “who are interested in contributing and cultivating that which is most important to us – our children’s education.” read more

Not Just Olmert Must Go; Livni, Kadima MUST Resign From Political, Governmental Leadership — Permanently!

PM Livni? Are We Crazy?, by Uzi Landau (Ynet)

Foreign Minister lacks independent worldview; we cannot afford another experiment.

“Livni, with all due respect, is there by coincidence. She was able to jump on the right bandwagon at the right time. She has no independent worldview. She zigzagged with her positions based on political benefits to be gained at the time. And while she’s finishing up her one-year internship at the Foreign Ministry, she’s already rushing to do some basic training at the Prime Minister’s Office, at the expense of the public.” read more

Winograd Committee: Deliberately Covered Over of Ideological and Cognitive Failure of Regime, Israeli Establishment Leading to Lebanon Outcome

Column One, by Caroline Glick (Jerusalem Post)

“The report’s concentration on the personal failures of the three men serves mainly to strengthen the Left’s push to place all the blame for the war’s dismal outcome on the personal incompetence of Israel’s leaders. This it does by deliberately ignoring the ideological and cognitive failure of the government and the Israeli establishment as a whole. It was this failure that led to the war and to its dismal outcome.” read more

Homesh: Focal Point for Efforts to Increase Jewish Population in Yehuda and the Shomron

Homesh: ‘A Settlement Renewal Point’, by Matthew Wagner (Jerusalem Post)

Full Text;

With the Israeli public’s morale at an all-time low, now is the time to launch a new bid for increased settlement activity in Judea and Samaria, with Homesh as a rallying point, Benny Katzover, former chairman of the Samaria Regional Council and a founder of Gush Emunim, said Thursday.

A huge demonstration at Homesh, one of four northern Samaria settlements evacuated during disengagement in August 2005, was being planned for this summer, when high schools and yeshivot are on vacation, said Katzover. He said he was lending his rich experience in settlement activism to the younger generation of settlement leaders. read more

Gov’t Silence = Acquiesence, But the Jewish People React to Make the World Better

‘I Have Set Before You Life and Death’, by Evelyn Gordon (Jerusalem Post)

“Due mainly to our own government’s continued silence – the world has come to view bombarding Israeli towns with missiles as unexceptionable behavior.”

Full Text;

The events of the past two weeks alone are enough to understand why many people thought that this year’s Independence Day took place under a cloud.

Finance Minister Abraham Hirchson suspended himself due to a criminal investigation for embezzlement; the state comptroller published a blistering report about Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s influence-
peddling in his former role as industry minister; the attorney-general considered opening two additional criminal cases against Olmert; the Knesset extended President Moshe Katsav’s leave due to a draft indictment for rape; and the Winograd Committee published its damning interim report on the failures of last summer’s Lebanon War. read more
