Parsha Vayigash 5771: Yosef, the Brothers and Real Teshuvah

Moshe Burt

There was an Israel National News report last week about how former IDF Chief Rabbi Yisrael Weiss expressed regret at having supported the expulsion, or as they call it the “disengagement.”

Rabbi Weiss expressed the following:

“Rabbi Yisrael Weiss, former IDF Chief Rabbi, has expressed regret over his role in the 2005 “Disengagement” from Gaza and northern Samaria. At the time, Rabbi Weiss came out against refusing orders, saying that IDF soldiers who are told to expel Jews from their homes by force must do so.” read more

Parshat Vayeishev 5771: Yosef and the Brothers vs the Hellinistic Israeli Regimes’ War of Polarization on Yiddishkeit

by Moshe Burt

A few years ago, just before Chanukah, a short article appeared on the INN website entitled;
“Mortar Shells Filled With Chanukah Light” which told about the Menorah which Neve Dekalim residents made from some of the spent Islamic mortal shells which were launched on their Gush Katif town over the years.

Reading about this special Menorah which was lit at one of the Jerusalem hotels which temporarily housed many evicted Neve Dekalim residents, took this author back in time to Philadelphia, in “the “old country” and to a point made by Rav Yehoshua Kaganoff about the pit in which Yaakov was thrown. The point bears repeating. read more

Parsha Vayigash 5770: Jewish Unity, Critical but Ever Elusive

by Moshe Burt

Parsha Mikeitz records the whole affair between Yosef and the brothers when they came to Mitzrayim to buy food and were accused by the Viceroy of being spies. We learned how after hearing their story and family history, Yosef demanded that they bring their youngest brother to him and incarcerated Shimon as insurance that the brothers would indeed return with Binyamin, their youngest brother. We learn that in the middle of Parsha Mikeitz, with the imprisonment of Shimon, the brothers recognized and attributed their predicament to the sin they had committed earlier by throwing Yosef into the pit and then selling him to the Mitzriyim. Yosef heard and understood their conversation and left their presence to cry silently. (Perek 42, posukim 21-24) read more

“Truce” of Weakness Emboldens Terrorists, Schalit Further From Freedom

.
Commentary;

The Olmert, Kadima, Barak, Livni, Yishai government of weakness, equivocation and partisan convenience has given up the store, the entirety of Israel’s diplomatic and military assets and set back Israel’s credibility to a historic low-point. Their lack of stregnth and principle has netted a minus in all areas, credibility, principle, hasbara and national branding. Gilad Schalit is further from liberation than ever.

Israel’s Governance Expresses Gaza Expulsion Regrets; Itches for a Repeat

.
Commentary;

My Beit Knesset’s learning program has recently featured a 1 hour daily Torah Ulpan for learning conversational Iv’rit in a contect of learning the Rambam’s Hichos Teshuva.

During one of the first classes, we discussed the concept of sincere, honest, heart-felt regret of wrong-doing and the will to change one’s ways. This discussion brought to mind the contrast between sincere, honest, heart-felt regret of wrong-doing and superficial “regret.”

The recent expressions of regret by a female former soldier for her role in the expulsion, as stated in an email, contrasts with expressions by Israel’s governing leaders, i.e. words of former Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer who basically admits that the expulsion was a mistake, but who still “hopes Israel will leave territories as soon as possible.” read more

Olmert to Step Down Only Upon New Leader’s Coalition

.
While Prime Minister Olmert announced that he would not be running in the Kadima Party primaries and that he will resign in September, he is by no means out of the picture yet.

Barak of IRIS cites these political procedural protocals noted by Jerusalem Post’s Gil Hoffman;

Kadima’s election committee decided on Tuesday to set an August 24 deadline to join the race, which it scheduled for September 17.

The winner in the Kadima primary will have until October 26 to submit his new government for approval by President Shimon Peres. read more

Learning From The Teflon PM: Deception on Cost of Livni’s Trip

.

Commentary;

Amidst the various and myriad corruption, graft and influence-peddling scandal accusations against prime minister Ehud Olmert, including
cash-stuffed envelopes, $4,000 a night hotel-rooms allegedly paid for by wealthy American financiers and more; it appears that Kadima’s leadership heir-apparent, who presents herself as Ms. Politically Clean, may have taken a corrupt leaf from her former mentor’s repertoire. MB
