Coalition Deal Leads to Labor ‘Crisis’

Labor Party chairman Amir Peretz may have characterized his meeting on Monday with Interim Prime Minister Ehud Olmert as “good” but his somber stroll through the Knesset Monday told a different story of what awaits him in the party ranks.

Labor MKs confirmed that there was a “crisis” in the party over Peretz’s handling of the coalition talks and the ministerial portfolios allotted to Labor. Tempers that had flared over the weekend were inflamed when the party was notified that Peretz had agreed to cancel the deputy ministerial positions. read more

The tomb of Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel is located in the Israeli Arab village of Kafr Kana, near the Golani Junction.

In recent weeks the iron bars at the entrance to the structure – which sits atop the cave the prominent rabbi is buried in – were bent and broken. The entire tomb was also set on fire.

The fire damaged the site, blackening the stones and obscuring explanatory plaques explaining its significance. The stone steps leading down to the grave have been smashed and one of the walls has been torn apart as well. The site is also apparently being used as a dumping ground for garbage from the local village. read more

Kadima Expects to Present Gov’t by Early Next Week

A senior Kadima official said he expects Interim Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to present his new government by early next week.

Kadima had actually hoped to finish coalition negotiations by the middle of this week.

The official said all the coalition agreements would be presented to the Knesset by next Sunday or Monday.

Despite the official’s remarks, Kadima has not announced any coalition agreements with Shas or United Torah Judaism, two religious parties which Olmert plans on including in his government. read more
