Rosh Hashana 5767: Unesaneh Tokef; Withstanding and Defying a Gezeira Rah

By Moshe Burt

Each Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, we daven the Unesaneh Tokef as part of the Mussaf tefillah.

The story behind the Unesaneh Tokef tefillah (expressing the seriousness of the day): relates the Gezeira Rah (evil decree) faced by R’ Amnon of Mainz and his Kehilla of forced conversion to Christianity dating back about 1,000 years.

R’ Amnon who, with his Kehilla, faced dread coersion as well as mortal, imminent threat of death, gave the perception of consideration of possible compliance with the demand to convert to Christianity and, as a result, became distraught at even having given the impression that he could betray Hashem. read more

War Committee to Begin Probe Monday By Herb Keinon (Jerusalem Post)

Excerpts;

The Winograd Committee, created to probe the war in Lebanon, is expected to start its work on Monday, following a tortuous route, whereby it took almost as long for the government to set up a committee to investigate the war as it did to fight the war itself.

The cabinet on Sunday approved the establishment of the Winograd Governmental Investigative Committee by a vote of 20-2, with Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz (Kadima) abstaining. read more

It’s About Justice, Family and Jewish National Values …!

Where Do We Go From Here, by Moshe Feiglin (the article soon to be archived here.)

“When the Jewish emissaries who searched for these children throughout Europe would enter the monastery, there was a sure way to identify them. The emissary would stand on a chair and call out, Shema Yisrael… (”Hear O’ Israel…”) and the Jewish children would automatically finish the sentence that had accompanied them from the time that they were born. At that point, it was easy to return them to their own nation and identity.” read more

Isn’t It About Time That Israel Re-asserts Her Sovereignty, Her Self-Defense, Instead of Collapsing, Appeasing Before World?

Column One: The Free World’s Achilles Heel, By Caroline Glick (Jerusalem Post)

Excerpts;

Britain’s Prime Minister Tony Blair is Israel’s best friend in Europe. And he’s not a very good friend.

Immediately after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the US, Blair was instrumental in convincing US President George W. Bush to view the Palestinian jihad against Israel as a conflict completely separate from the global jihad. His success in convincing Bush of this distinction turned the anti-Semitic – not to mention strategically disastrous – view that terrorists who kill Israelis should be treated differently from terrorists who kill anyone else into one of the cognitive foundations of the US war on Islamic terror. read more
