Maariv: Givati Brigade Exercise Find 71 soldiers Killed First 24 Hours in Simulation Entering Gaza, by Dr. Aaron Lerner IMRA

Full Text;

Maariv correspondent Amir Buchbut reports in today’s edition that reservists in the Givati Brigade say a recent exercise they carried out practicing an invasion of the Gaza Strip found 71 soldiers killed in the first 24 hour of the invasion. The heavy losses were attributed to the major improvement in weapons and explosives that the Palestinians have amassed thanks to the long period during which they have been able to smuggle and prepare for battle. read more

With All of the Commissions of Investigation and All of the Findings, The Lessons of Lebanon are Lost on Dumb and Dumber

They Would Not Listen, by Moshe Arens (Haaretz)

For context, click here.

“Rocket fire from Gaza occurs almost daily, endangering the civilian population in the south. It is a small-scale version of what happened in the north. Unless something is done about it soon, it will surely turn into a larger-scale version as time goes on. Yet our ground forces are not being ordered to put the Qassam rocket launchers out of range of our civilian population in the south.”

Now that we are beginning to learn what was said in the inner councils – at meetings with the prime minister, at meetings of the ministerial security committee and at sessions of the Israel Defense Forces General Staff – it is becoming clear that our leaders just would not listen to opinions that were contrary to theirs while discussions were being held on the conduct of the Second Lebanon War. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and then chief of staff Dan Halutz stubbornly clung to their fantasy that the war could be won from the air, while Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni thought that we could get the UN Security Council to pull us out of this mess by calling for a cease-fire, leaving Hezbollah undefeated. read more

Israel’s Security Dependence on Nations: Lessons Never Learned

.
Commentary;

This author finds the logic of government officials and that of many Israelis incredible in it’s abject and profane absurdity.

That officials such as Pensioners’ Affairs Minister Rafi Eitan, the former intelligence official who rolled over on Janathan Pollard (one of the main reasons why Pollard remains incarcerated), can consider rolling back time to the days of UN Mandates which are breakable by the Arabs is insane and absurd.

If one has selective amnesia concerning the broken UN Emergency force mandate which was put in place as a result of Sinai campaign, one surely ought to be able to intellectualize the realization of the flawed Lebanon peacekeeping mission under whose noses Hezbollah has amassed 30,000 rockets and scream bloody murder at a regime which defines victory in a way which is not victory and who sets goals of “winning,” be it in Lebanon or in Gaza, as the one-sided placement of multi-national forces. Lebanon and the Consequences of Lack of a Thorough, Thought-Through Military Plan

Think Again: The Sages and Winograd, by Jonathan Rosenblum (Jerusalem Post)

Commentary;

With Chag Shavuot coming tonight, Jonathan Rosenblum’s column adds a spiritual dimension to our current national crises.

There was a time in recent history, in Israel’s previous wars, where the IDF had the capacity to plan ahead, to plan not only the battle at hand, but to see the implications of the battle at hand and to plan two or three steps ahead and yet to improvise — or in NFL terminology; to “audible at the line of scrimmage.” read more
