Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said on Sunday that he held the Palestinian Authority and the Hamas-ruled government responsible for an attack on a military outpost near the Gaza Strip earlier in the day, that left two soldiers dead and one reported missing.

Earlier, IDF Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz met with senior IDF officers to discuss how best to respond to the morning’s attack on IDF troops stationed near the Gaza border, in which four soldiers were wounded.

Operatives from three different Palestinian groups, all apparently working under the auspices of the Popular Resistance Committees, breached the border at approximately 6:00 a.m. via a tunnel and fired an anti-tank missile at an IDF outpost, which sparked an intense exchange of fire.

Halutz said that he would recommend a “harsh response.”
