Politics Suspected in Freeing Alleged Arab Killers

Police officials suspect that Attorney General Menachem Mazuz’s handling of the case against the suspected lynch murderers of a Jew who killed four Arabs is laced with politics. Natan-Zada killed four residents of Shfaram, in the Galilee, on a bus three years ago. An angry Arab mob stormed the bus and murdered him. Police handed over to the Attorney General evidence against seven leaders of the mob, but hearings were delayed. Restrictions against the suspects recently were lifted and bail money was returned.
A police source in the Northern Region said that the delay was for political reasons. “It is clear that such a decision [to indict the suspects] is likely to incite the Arab sector, in particular after Mazuz’s decision to close the investigations against the policemen involved in the October 2000 shootings,” according to the source quoted by the Hebrew newspaper Haaretz.
The Justice Ministry stated that the case has not yet been closed although the bail money was returned.
