Former Chief of Staff to Head IDF Inquiry into Lebanon War
Full text;
Former IDF Chief of General Staff, Lt. -Gen. (res.) Dan Shomron was chosen to head the military committee investigating the IDF’s management of the recent war in Lebanon, sources said on Tuesday evening.
Shomron, who was expected to begin work in the coming days, was asked by Chief of General Staff Lt. -Gen. Dan Halutz to lead the inquiry several weeks ago. The final decision was delayed due to Shomron’s absence from Israel until now.
The army had established 50 other teams that were simultaneously investigating the different roles played by the IDF at all levels during the war.
Inquiries were being made in all divisions, brigades, battalions, and companies that took part in the war.
Shomron commanded the Entebbe rescue operation in 1976 and served as chief of general staff from 1987 to 1991, a period during which the first intifada and the first Gulf War broke out.
He is responsible for transforming the structure of IDF ground units into their present form.
After finishing his army career, Shomron served as chairman of Israel Military Industries.
