Hebron Council, Security Establishment Compromise
Excerpts;
“After many hours of negotiations, a compromise was reached early Monday morning between the Hebron Jewish Council and the security establishment regarding the evacuation of the marketplace in the city’s Avraham Avinu neighborhood.”
“The agreement states that the settlers will leave the marketplace voluntarily by Monday night, but will be allowed to return in about two months, when rental or subletting contracts will be signed with the Hebron municipality, Israel Radio reported.”
Hevron Residents Reach an Agreement With Government
Hebron Squatters Agree to Leave Voluntarily – and Return, Legally
Excerpts;
“The state and Hebron’s settlers reached an agreement early Monday morning under which Jewish squatters would voluntarily leave the city’s wholesale market by Monday night, Israel Radio reported. In exchange, they are to secure the state’s promise to speed up legal proceedings that would enable them to return to the market legally.”
“Brigadier General Yair Golan, commander of the IDF forces in the West Bank, met on Sunday with Hebron settlement leaders to present the state’s final offer, whose outline was first reported in Haaretz two weeks ago. Under this proposal, which has been approved by Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, settlers would voluntarily evacuate the stores in which they are squatting, and in return, the IDF would speed up a legal examination of the possibility of expropriating the market from the Hebron municipality and leasing it to the settlers. The basis for expropriation is that the market was originally Jewish property, which was seized by Jordan in 1948 and later transferred to the Hebron municipality.”
Hebron Settlers to Evacuate Market Willingly
Excerpts;
“Hebron settlers agreed to evacuate a cluster of homes in the city’s old market after reaching a compromise with security forces who promised the homes will not be transferred to Palestinians until the conclusion of a legal ownership battle.”
“Settler leaders were soothed by a government pledge not to transfer the homes to Palestinian families until the end of a court battle over the homes’ ownership. Settlers petitioned the High Court that the homes belong to Jews and demanded they’d be rented from Hebron’s Municipality to their current Jewish inhabitants.”
Commentary:
Reasonable questions need to be asked about the validity of this compromise reached between the Chevron residents and the “state.”
– What exactly is the “Hebron Municipality”? Is it a Jewish Council which handles affairs of the Jewish Community? Is it an arm of the IDF or of the Police? Or is it an Arab body which controls the 80 % of Chevron ceded by Bibi in 1996?
– How firm is this “2 month” return provision and what is it dependent upon? Is it subject to the same blatant dishonesty as with every “compromise” made by the government of Israel with the Gush Katif Refugees and in general, with all of it’s citizens?
–It is unclear, after reading various interpretations of the “compromise”, whether or not the current residents of Mitzpe Shalhevet will be permitted to return and resume living in the neighborhood after the “2 month period.” It has been asserted in some accounts of the “compromise” such as this one, that “the government insists that those who moved into the buildings without permission not be permitted to profit from their actions.” (As if shlepping their belongs or hiring someone to shlepp them, paying storage on their belongings, having to rent elsewhere temporarily and then shlepping the belongings back plus suffering police and Yassam beating is seen as “profiting.”)
– Why couldn’t a formula such as this have been arrived at weeks or months before this? Or does Olmert, or Sharon before him, need to be seen as macho, as bullying and beating up Jews? Does the attitude still exist amongst the military and the government regarding the Jewish Community of Chevron, as was shown on this blog previously here and here, i.e. the army perception that we and the Jewish Community of Chevron are only in Chevron at the pleasure of the government and the army?
Amona Destruction Set for Tuesday
MK Uri Ariel Moves to ‘Unauthorized Outpost’ With His Family
Full Text;
“MK Uri Ariel (National Union) moved with his family to the threatened community of Amona Sunday.”
“Amona, which is near the Binyamin town of Ofra, is slated for destruction, despite the fact that residents are in the midst of finalizing the registration of the land upon which nine permanent homes have been built.”
“Uriel says he intends to struggle against the expulsion in order to prevent, at any cost, the attempted uprooting of the town.”
“‘Olmert has no G-d,’ MK Uriel said. ‘He does everything in order to display strength and stubbornness, even if the entire society must pay the price.'”
MK Uri Ariel Calls on Olmert to Reach Deal with Amona Residents
Full Text;
“MK Uri Ariel (National Union) said in response to the compromise reached with Jewish residents of the Hevron market, that Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert should reach a compromise with residents of Amona, slated for demolition later this week.”
“Ariel said the Hevron compromise ‘shows that it is possible to reach agreement and understanding without resort to violence. I call upon Olmert to act in the same way regarding Amona, and prevent a dangerous conflict. Any attempt on his part to act differently in relation to Hevron’s [Does Ariel mean “in relation to Amona’s residents ” vs the “agreement” worked out with Mitzpe Shalhevet residents?] residents proves that he desires to bring about civil war.’”
Commentary;
This Author ventures an opinion undoubtedly held by others; that Uri Ariel, rather than Benny Elon should be party chairman of HaIchud HaLeumi. And there are a lot of undecided voters out there who are seek a clear alternative to Olmert or Bibi.
Benny has not taken a stance like Ariel, nor has he established any viable campaign to show an alternative to Olmert or Bibi. For too long, the National Union has put all of it’s apples into the basket of unifying with Mafdal — a big mistake for it’s leader Zevulun Orlev is opposed to outright support the right of Jews to live in Eretz Yisrael — his past actions prove this out, a rehash is not necessary.
Unfortunately, Elon has not moved to build a Big-Bang encompassing Shas, Baruch Marzel’s party and others. Such a party could have been tempting for other nationalists to dump Likud.
Ariel is apparently the only political figure of prominence to “put it on the line”, to state that “he intends to struggle against the expulsion in order to prevent, at any cost, the attempted uprooting of the town.” And he has proven his words by moving to Amona. For this he deserves our support in whatever way possible. MB
