Hanegbi: Likud Must Examine its Errors
Excerpt:
“His comments in an Army Radio interview came in response to recent public opinion polls indicating a sharp decline in support for Likud following the establishment of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s new party Kadima.”
While Hanegbi is examining Likud’s “errors” which have caused the erosion of support, he might try a little self-examination as to why he repeatedly and arrogantly evaded receiving Nadia Matar’s petitions with hundreds of thousands of names against a pa terror state. He might want to self-examine his mainly arrogant general demeanor.
He might also look at his own mal-feasance and abrogation of leadership in first opposing the expulsion, then siding with Sharon and in not voting in favor of expulsion. He might want to ask why he didn’t reach out to other borderline Likud MKs to vote in favor of the resolution which would have mandated a national referrendum on the expulsion. The resolution, which would have become law with Shas’ support but for lack of 10 more Likud members. MB
Excerpts:
“With a straight face and a dour demeanor, Peres intoned about the need ‘to put country before party’, thereby seeking to explain his dramatic decision to leave the Labor Party and back Ariel Sharon for Prime Minister.”
“But those words are merely an empty facade, a transparent ruse that no one can take seriously.”
” … It was just two weeks ago that Peres sought to be elected Chairman of Labor, and its candidate for Prime Minister, in the party’s primaries.”
“In other words – had Peres won that vote, rather than enduring an embarrassing defeat to Amir Peretz – he would now be running against Sharon in the upcoming election.”
“But because he lost, and Peretz refused to guarantee him a safe slot on Labor’s Knesset list, Peres was left … to cut and bolt, throwing his support behind Sharon in the hopes of salvaging his own political future.”
“’Country before party’? Hardly. It was more like ‘Peres before party.’”
