Shavit: “Our Political Elite has Become Unfit”

Corrupt Elite Decried at Herzliya Conference, by Ezra HaLevi (Israel National News)

Journalist Ari Shavit: “‘The development towns, the agricultural communities and the settlements are where the loyalty lies,’ he said. ‘It is amazing that the very people the state neglects most are those who remain faithful to the state. There is a certain type of Jewish identity that cannot be defined that is alive there.’”

Effie Eitam’s Advice for COS Ashkenazi: Revive IDF’s Fighting Spirit, Restore Old Values

“This platform, which proved itself more than once in the past, is made up of thousands of combat troops, combat supporters, and headquarters’ soldiers. Each one requires his own training and attention, but most of all, each one needs a leadership that talks to him or her in the right way, according to rank and position; a leadership that conveys the sense that the ship’s helm is manned by captains that see far into the future.”

“We must rid ourselves of the notion that someone else will fight for us – the Americans, Palestinian leader Abbas, the Lebanese government, or a multinational force. There’s no substitute for IDF action and capabilities, and only the IDF can constitute the security wall around us.” read more

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz released a joint statement Monday night announcing their decision to appoint Defense Ministry Dir.-Gen. Maj.-Gen. (res.) Gabi Ashkenazi to the post of IDF chief of General Staff.

The announcement was made following a rare joint meeting between the two at the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem.

Peretz plans to bring the appointment to the cabinet for approval Sunday after Ashkenazi is approved by a judicial committee headed by former judge Ya’acov Terkel. Ashkenazi will become the 19th chief of staff and the first from the Golani Brigade. He will replace Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz, who announced his resignation last Tuesday. read more

Parsha Bo: Doing Mitzvot and Hashem’s Will; Breaking Out of Apathy and Fear’s Box

By Moshe Burt

Parsha Bo is the one which, for me, annually relates to that crazy tune which played back “in the Old Country” a couple of decades ago, “Does Your Korbon Pesach Lose It’s Flavor Tied to the Bedpost Overnight?” (Actually, the real title to the song was “Does Your Chewing Gum Lose It’s Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight?”)

Over the years, I’ve come to associate this nutty parody of mine with the very heart of our Parsha. That is the Mitzvot of taking the Korbon Pesach, applying the da’am on Jewish doorposts, the going up from Mitzrayim (Egypt) to “…a land flowing with milk and honey …” and the first mitzvah commanded of the National entity (B’nai Yisrael), the Kiddush HaChodesh — the sanctification of the New Moon and the relevance today of these mitzvot which relate to emunah (belief in) and yirat (fear of)Hashem. And each year, just like countless other stories of our heritage and Halachot, the perspective each year is unique just as the events of each year are unique unto themselves, yet part of Hashem’s “vast eternal plan.” read more

“Israeli Arabs” Crave Destruction of Medinat Yehudi

Academic: Israeli-Arabs Want End of Jewish State, by Yaakov Lappin (Ynet)

“The Palestinian national minority in Israel has a consensus view demanding recognition by the Jews of their exclusive guilt and their own lack of legitimacy, as well as an agreement to destroy the national Jewish project.”

Excerpts;

There was no way of accommodating the demands of Israeli-Arabs, short of the destruction of Israel and its replacement with an Arab state, a senior Israeli academic told a stormy session of the Herzliya Conference Monday, held to discuss the Arab minority in Israel. read more

The Movement for Quality Government filed a petition Monday with the High Court of Justice calling for a delay in the appointment of Defense Ministry Director-General Maj.-Gen. (res.) Gabi Ashkenazi as the IDF’s 19th chief of General Staff until after the Winograd Committee publishes its interim conclusions at the beginning of February.

“There is no way a recommendation can be submitted in which both the appointing members from the political echelon and the candidates could be included in [the committee’s conclusions],” the petition said. read more
