Shteinitz Calls on Mazuz to Examine Suspicious Police Behavior

“The chairman of the Knesset committee tasked to examine the events during the eviction of nine families in Amona, MK Yuval Shteinitz, has called on Attorney General Menachem Mazuz to examine actions by police that raise suspicions of premeditated violations. AG Defends Decision to Evacuate Amona


Attorney General Menahem Mazuz told the special parliamentary investigative committee into the violent events at Amona on Tuesday that settler offers of a compromise that were presented to him prior to the Amona evacuation were untenable, not to the point, and unfeasible.

“Mazuz added that the Amona structures had to be demolished because, ‘they were tainted with all levels of illegality.'”

“Anat Roth, a researcher from the Israeli Institute for Democracy, has given the first testimony given before the committee investigating police violence during the recent evacuation of Amona. Ms. Roth came to Amona at that time to compile material for a doctoral assignment. She previously worked as an assistant to MK Matan Vilnai and former Labor party leader Amram Mitzna.

Ms. Roth stated that she had been in Amona since the day before the expulsion. She noticed that in their pre-evacuation preparations, residents and demonstrators alike stressed the need to avoid violence. “A female IDF soldier has been disciplined for answering a group of girls who criticized soldiers. The incident in question occurred as they rode together on a civilian bus towards Beit El.”

“The soldier was talking with a group of girls who were returning from last week’s demonstration in Jerusalem protesting the vicious manner in which the Amona outpost had been evacuated.”

“The soldier was warned by a female IDF officer, who was also on the bus, not to talk to the girls. The soldier ignored the warning and continued her conversation.
